This page has background information about the Evenblox system. This page has the following paragraphs:

Components

The evenblox system has several components. The picture below shows the components in two different setups. The blue dotted rectangles show the electronics components like Arduinos, power regulators, switches, and displays.

In the picture below, you can see the Evenblox system in a exploded view.

Component Sizes

The blocks are multiples of 40 mm and can be square or rectangular. The Boxes, Covers, and Extenders are always 0,2 mm smaller in both directions, giving some slack and wiggle room.

The Evenblocks system fits on a 2020 aluminum profile.

Printing

All components can be printed flat on the print bed. You don’t need support for printing components. For the larger Mountplates and Covers, you can use a brim. This depends on how well your prints stick to the baseplate. The Boxes have a bottom with many holes, which will relieve stress on the print. You can use the following settings as a starting point:

  • 0.2 Layer height
  • 15% infill
  • No Supports
  • No Brim

PLA filament will be sufficient for most applications. When you need more strength, you can choose PLA Tough filament.

Fasteners and heat-set inserts

To use the evenblox system, you need two sizes of fasteners and heat-set inserts, M3 and M4. The M3 is used for the covers, and the boxes with their inserts are secured with M4 screws. The M4 screws are sturdier, but the M3 screws are more aesthetically pleasing on the cover.

Mounting covers

To mount a cover on a box, you need M3 screws and optional heat-set inserts. The mounting hole for the cover in the boxes has a shape that allows both. The heat-set inserts are 5,7 mm, so the hole leaves some room for the plastic from the filament to squeeze out a bit. When using only screws, you need 7 mm extra length to overcome the depth of the hole.

When using the heat-set inserts, you need the following for each box:

  • 4x heat-set insert M3
  • 4x M3 x 16mm screw (hex socket)

When you don’t want to use the heat-set inserts, you need the following for each box:

  • 4x M3 x 20mm screw (hex socket)

Mounting Extenders

To mount covers on an Extender, you also use M3 x 16mm screws. Use M3 x 25mm on the corners of the extenders. These screws go through the outer holes from the covers and the Extener into the boxes.

Mounting boxes

The boxes and inserts are mounted with the same screw. When using the 2020 extrusion, you need M4 sliding nuts, and when using Baseplates, you need M4 heat-set inserts.

When using the 2020 extrusion, you need the following for each box:

  • 4x sliding nut M4
  • 4x M4 x 10mm screw (hex socket)

When you want to use the heat-set inserts, you need the following for each box:

  • 4x heat-set insert M4
  • 4x M4 x 10mm screw (hex socket)

Cable Management

When using 2020 extrusion, there is a lot of space under the boxes. Wires between components in the boxes run through the bottom of the boxes. The boxes have big holes to allow wires with connectors to pass through. If you use a Baseplate, there is also enough space, but with bigger connectors, it is necessary to unscrew the Box from the base plate.
